Education starts with relationship building and creating a classroom community. It is important for students to feel safe and know they will not be judged by me or other students.
Communication is key in providing feedback to students and communicating expectations. Communication is not just between a teacher and a student. Collaboration of staff, administration, counselors and parents is necessary in order to provide the best education possible. I feel strongly that parent partnerships and communication should not always be negative. Give a parent a call when the student does something positive as well.
Make each lesson positive, pertinent, and personal. A student who is engaged in a lesson is much less likely to have management issues. This is something I have seen first hand. In order to do this you need to know your students and what is important to them.

When you walk into a class it is difficult to point out which students are on a different education or behavioral plan. Knowing this information is vitally important for each student’s educational needs as well as for the overall management of a classroom. A significant amount of special education students who are in general education classes take an art class. You need to know the needs of each student and be in contact with other departments. With the collaboration of counselors, case managers, and teachers, we have the ability to give each student the best education possible.
