The students read Randy Riley's Really Big Hit which is a picture book about a boy who saved the world by building a robot. This is a big mission, so the students made a robot out of found objects to help them with an everyday task… Or a chore! The students used their sketchbook to draw 4 different robots that helped them with something. After they drew their robots and gave them a chore, they chose found objects to recreate their drawing. The students had a few challenges:
Build a robot that looks somewhat like their drawing
Figure out how to attach all the parts
Make the robot sturdy and stand on its own
The students went the easy way and used tape to attach the parts together, then when they came back to art, they realized that the tape did not hold. Alas... a new challenge!
