In this lesson the students learned about symmetry, abstraction, self-portraits, and multi-media. Kindergartners go through projects really fast so I decided to come up a project that had different techniques and materials!
The students learned about the artist Paul Klee and how he used squares to make up an image.
Pre-assessment: Practiced cutting a straight line, a curved line, and a zig-zag line. Students also drew a self-portrait
Painted the head, body, and neck with 2 colors of tissue paper! Their favorite part was peeling off the dry tissue paper to find that their papers were 'painted.'
Glued more than 4 different colors of tissue paper onto their background.
The students put their cutting skills to work by cutting out their head, neck, and body. They then glued the parts onto their background.
The students drew their eyes, nose, and lips on their cutout face.
The last step was creating different patterns in their hair using permanent markers.
